So I made the call to head down to the ‘gong for this show. A Thursday night, no work the following day. What the fuck, you’re only young once so I hit the road.
I arrived at Howlin’ Wolf Bar, with its impressive array of drinks proudly on display behind the bar just as Comacozer hit the stage. Well, technically it’s a stage. The expression “not enough room to swing a cat” doesn’t really cut it here. There’s not even enough room to swing an imaginary cat on this one, but that’s rock’n’roll for ya! Comacozer opened with one of their spaced out intros, before morphing into some spaced out doom. Heavy, and with lotsa effects along the way. Pulsating waves of sound and great guitar tones. Their bassplayer also pulls some good, grunty sounds from his Rickenbacker. Two more songs of the same ilk complete the set, with one of ‘em having an almost Eastern trance vibe running through the middle, before rolling into a more balls out riff-fest. I enjoyed the band, but reckon adding a vocalist would greatly benefit the sound.
U.S. headliners Wo Fat, here on a longish jaunt around Australia as well as NZ, were next up. Been a fan of their psyche-rock stoner rock for years for years, so keen as fuck for them to start. Continue reading →
There were some amazing releases that come out in 2016, and as with every year, I start out with the best of intentions keeping a list of my favourites as they hit, only to let it fall by the wayside by about March. Yeah I know, it doesn’t last long! So undoubtedly I will forgot lots of great releases from 2016. There’s been the talked about releases like Metallica’sHardwired… To Self Destruct (which for me has been quite a disappointment, some moments of clarity and power but as whole, it wasn’t the driving force I was hoping for), then there’s been some that have come out of left field that have really thrown me for six and impressed me quite a lot, like Electric MagusOlympus Noms, which is Raul Sanchez (Magic Dirt, River Of Snakes, Midnight Woolf) latest offering through Wild Animals Records. Like with John Frusciante’s solo albums, some sound quite unique and very different to his work with Red Hot Chili Peppers (which is an awesome thing these days!) yet his style and soul still comes through in various ways. Electric Magus is like this for Sanchez compared to his ‘usual’ guitar driven work. It’s totally different yet still somehow connects with me for the same reasons.
I still listen to loads of releases from all around the world, but more and more as time goes on I find myself mainly listening to local bands. Possibly for a few reasons, I like to support local muso’s and friends, it’s possible to see them more live which in turn gets us more stoked on listening back to a band later, and maybe most importantly, there are just so many fuckin incredible bands in Melbourne and throughout Australia that there’s not enough time to sometimes reach out further. It must be something in the whiskey. Dallas has delivered some absolute monster bands over the years. (See a review here of WF buddies Mothership for further evidence of this HERE) Which brings me to Wo Fat. I’d bought a couple of their early albums, and always dug ‘em but they then managed to slip under my radar. Until now! Midnight Cometh, which is their fifth studio release (to go with a live record and a coupla split releases) recently landed in my inbox, and straight outta the gate, it impressed the fuck outta me. Based in Sweden, but drawing members from the States, and France as well as Sweden, Blues Pills present as diverse a lineage as their musical influences. Bassist Zack Anderson took the time to speak to me about the new LP, Lady In Gold.
El Jefe: Could you tell me a bit about the new record, recording experiences around it and how you approached it differently to the first LP?
ZackAnderson: The first one was a bit easier due to the fact that we already had the songs written. This time around, we were touring all the time and didn’t have many opportunities to stop and write. Because of this, we also had to work a lot harder to get it together. So the writing process was a lot slower. We’d go into the studio and put a few things down at a time and gradually add to it. This was done over about two years. But the actual recording process was much the same as the first record. We used the same studio and engineer, just spent more time writing and recording. And because the songs were a lot more diverse and had moved away a bit from the late ‘60s / early ‘70s blues rock of the first record, we were a bit worried about how this one would be received. We’ve introduced a lot of soul and Motown, and even folk. Elin (Larsson – vocals) is a huge Aretha Franklin fan (no surprises there! EJ) and added a lot of this into her vocals. While on a European tour with the equally mighty Wo Fat, Dallas, Texas power rock trio Mothership, stopped off at Freak Valley and have delivered us their Live Over Freak Valley LP, and fans of heavy music should be grateful they did. Sounding like the bastard spawn of Blue Cheer, Sabbath with Hendrix looking on, Mothership combine heavy-handed riffs with a powerful groove but most importantly sound like they’re having a blast when they hit the stage. The Juett brothers masterfully handle the guitar and bass duties while splitting the vocals between them and drummer Judge Smith lays down some ballsy and fluid drum beats to tie the whole thing together
Opening the set with ‘Hallucination’, an instrumental that starts with a slow crawl but soon kicks in with a galloping riff-fest. They back it up immediately with the behemoth tune ‘Lunar Master’. Continue reading →
