Turbonegro have some of the most loyal fans in the world. They have their own gang called Turbojugend, with chapters all over the world. Over four days in Melbourne, three venues celebrated all things Turbo. It started at The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar on Thursday night, the party continued at The Bendigo Hotel Friday night, and will finish at The Spotted Mallard. That’s a lot of love for Turbo!

Friday night’s gig at The Bendigo had five killer bands playing dirty punk and metal. Coming down from Brisbane, The Dirty F Holes, slayed the crowd. What made them stand out was the skronking horn player. Lead singer Chucky jumped off the stage into the crowd like a possessed preacher in the pulpit. This was a good indication on what was to come. RIVER ROCKS 2019: The Meanies, Hard-Ons, Painters and Dockers, Rocket Science, Los Chicos, Cable Ties, Stiff Richards, Moler, The Neptune Power Federation, The Tremors, Thee Cha Cha Chas, Dr. Colossus, The Breadmakers, Gentle Ben and His Shimmering Hands, Dicklord, Danny Walsh Banned, Fangin’ Felines. The Barwon Club, Geelong. 09-11-2019.

To paraphrase the late great Chris Wilson, ‘If your ears aren’t ringing at the end of the gig fuck off and go home’.

Your family reunion has been relocated from your grandmother’s house to a dirty dive bar in Geelong, but instead off your family members sitting around the piano playing ballads, your going to get kicked in the head from people jumping off the stage, and the soundtrack is every band you love from now until yesterday.

Every year the Barwon Club puts on the dirtiest, filthiest, rock n roll festival this side of the gutter, all your best friends are here, and you’re all sleep deprived because you’ve all just crawled out of a bar 24 hours before. This behaviour is not out of the ordinary, it’s just how the rock’n’roll community rolls.

Danny Walsh Banned kicked off proceedings on the main stage. No matter who Danny is playing to he always manages to win them over, his kinetic energy is something you can’t bottle. Continue reading

DR. COLOSSUS ‘The Dank’ Album Review.

Words Mark Ireland.

Local Melbourne riff lords Dr. Colossus have been bludgeoning crowds with their melodic fuzziness for a number of years now, the new album The Dank is full of hypnotic groove that will get the listener lost as soon as the needle hits the record.

The name Dr. Colossus is a reference to a Simpsons character and the album is filled throughout with others; from the track ‘Future Bart’ to the cover art (which has a picture of Moe’s Tavern), these references add so much fun to the songs that you can’t help but laugh. Continue reading

RIVER ROCKS 2015 with Cosmic Psychos, Meanies, Hoss, The Casanovas, Mustang, Legends Of Motorsport and loads more! Barwon Club Hotel, Geelong. 21-11-2015.

I was ridiculously attending only my first River Rocks festival at the Barwon Club in Geelong last Saturday. It’s strange how you know some things will be amazing experiences but you have just never been before. 2015 was in fact the 8th River Rocks and it had sold out again, which was to be expected with such a massive line up including Cosmic Psychos, Meanies, Hoss, The Casanovas, Batpiss, Mustang, Legends of Motorsport and loads more.

I arrived before doors and even the empty layout impressed me, there was something in the air already and it felt exciting, like the first few Big Day Out’s in Sydney I’d attended, Alternative Nation, and Summersault.

I was asked to cover the day but I also work with, have worked with or are mates with some of bands on the line up, so it wouldn’t be fair to not state this up front. I will therefore do my best to be completely unbiased and give an accurate account of the day.

BEASTWARS, Horsehunter, HITS, Dr Colossus, System of Venus. Yah Yah’s, Melbourne. 09-05-2015.

Cherry Rock Festival not only warms the cockles of our loins with its beer soaked AC/DC Laned magnificence, it also bares host to an impressive round of Cherry side shows. A lot of people I met at this show had travelled up from Adelaide for a full Cherry weekend experience. It is moments like this when you realise how lucky we are to have this fucking amazing music scene on our doorstep. Tonight’s show at Yah Yah’s featured a very impressively sludgey line up featuring the cream of the scene.

System of Venus were the first cab off the rank. This threepiece sounds more than sum of its parts. Heavy as hell riffs that not only groove but aren’t afraid to sit down on it and let it chug. Fatima’s vocals compliment the heavy grooves perfectly.
