During the ’90s Melbourne had a thriving all ages band scene, and the kings of that scene were The Meanies, they realised that punk rock was not just for adults but for everyone of all ages, everywhere they played there was total chaos, but not in the malicious sense, it was more unbridled energy kind of chaos.

There were some amazing releases that come out in 2016, and as with every year, I start out with the best of intentions keeping a list of my favourites as they hit, only to let it fall by the wayside by about March. Yeah I know, it doesn’t last long! So undoubtedly I will forgot lots of great releases from 2016. There’s been the talked about releases like Metallica’sHardwired… To Self Destruct (which for me has been quite a disappointment, some moments of clarity and power but as whole, it wasn’t the driving force I was hoping for), then there’s been some that have come out of left field that have really thrown me for six and impressed me quite a lot, like Electric MagusOlympus Noms, which is Raul Sanchez (Magic Dirt, River Of Snakes, Midnight Woolf) latest offering through Wild Animals Records. Like with John Frusciante’s solo albums, some sound quite unique and very different to his work with Red Hot Chili Peppers (which is an awesome thing these days!) yet his style and soul still comes through in various ways. Electric Magus is like this for Sanchez compared to his ‘usual’ guitar driven work. It’s totally different yet still somehow connects with me for the same reasons.
I still listen to loads of releases from all around the world, but more and more as time goes on I find myself mainly listening to local bands. Possibly for a few reasons, I like to support local muso’s and friends, it’s possible to see them more live which in turn gets us more stoked on listening back to a band later, and maybe most importantly, there are just so many fuckin incredible bands in Melbourne and throughout Australia that there’s not enough time to sometimes reach out further. Sun God Replica are back with their third release Grandular Fever. Considering ‘grandular’ is not actually a word, I was a little perplexed as to the meaning and concept of this album title. Perhaps it’s a play on the virus Glandular Fever? Is it about a fever or virus of grand proportions? The album cover is also not giving away any clues to the title meaning. The image on the cover is a throwback to 1970s psychedelic aesthetics and fashion, dialled up to 11 out of ten, giving the impression Sun God Replica may have raided the costume department of their local theatre company. This however is a pretty good indication of the sounds that are featured on Grandular Fever; fuzzy psychedelic rock and fun vibes that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Opening track ‘Blow Your Mind’ kicks off the album with a ’70s psychedelic inspired number with catchy pop melodies. Upbeat, relaxed and fun is the general vibe with this song, with simple vocals, standard rock drum beats and a guitar solo, this accurately sets up the retro sounding direction of the rest of the album. The lyrics tick the box for abstract, psychedelia references, as shown by the song’s opening lyrics; “I’m a trap door spiderman, I’m holding flowers…” before launching into a chorus with the repeating lyrics of; “Want to blow your mind.” There are also references to going back in time and drugs for good measure.

It’s that time of year again. Collingwood is battening down the hatches and The Tote and The Bendigo are rolling up their sleeves in preparation for Melbourne’s sell-out celebration of metal, rock and beer, Brewtality. On Saturday 6th August 33 bands will strut their good stuff across three stages, including local psychedelic space rock legends Seedy Jeezus.
No strangers to Brewtality, Seedy have previously headlined the upstairs stage. Guitarist Lex Waterreus loves the festival and talked to us about how important it is to the local scene: “A lot of bands who many people don’t see or don’t bother to see will get in front of people and hopefully play their asses off and get new fans, sell merch and get support from punters. Anything like this is an oasis of unexposed local talent. I remember when Heavy posted for people to suggest names for it and seeing the spark that ignited everything. That in itself tells you the level that this was born from – grass roots. Local import, normal folks wanting to try something. Not a corporate shark tank trying to devise a strategy. Just fans of the music, seeing a scene and a place to do something to help it blossom. The Brewtality crew spend a LONNNNNGGGGG time deciding who they want to play and it’s not easy to get on. River Rocks 2015 at the Barwon Club Hotel in Geelong was easily one of the greatest festivals we’ve ever attended; kick arse line-up, loads of mates and in one of the best pubs in Australia. Of course no festival is worth its weight in gold without Melbourne rock icon and gig attending celebrity, Poodle. So once we saw him there we knew shit was going to get crazy! We caught up with Poodle after the bruises started to yellow and we’d given up hope on the broken sunnies that were lost, he gave us his ratings out of 5 for each band he caught at the festival! I was ridiculously attending only my first River Rocks festival at the BarwonClub in Geelong last Saturday. It’s strange how you know some things will be amazing experiences but you have just never been before. 2015 was in fact the 8th River Rocks and it had sold out again, which was to be expected with such a massive line up including Cosmic Psychos, Meanies, Hoss, The Casanovas, Batpiss, Mustang, Legends of Motorsport and loads more.
I arrived before doors and even the empty layout impressed me, there was something in the air already and it felt exciting, like the first few Big Day Out’s in Sydney I’d attended, AlternativeNation, and Summersault.
I was asked to cover the day but I also work with, have worked with or are mates with some of bands on the line up, so it wouldn’t be fair to not state this up front. I will therefore do my best to be completely unbiased and give an accurate account of the day.
