The past four years PBS radio  have put on Heavy and Hammered at The Tote to showcase Melbourne’s amazing scene of metal, stoner and punk bands.

Over the past year there has been a lot of controversy in the press about gig line ups and festivals not being equally balanced in the male / female ratio of bands on the bill, PBS have stood above the crowd and presented a line up that promotes equality and gender.  Which just goes to prove that Melbourne can provide a balanced lineup of bands without compromising their integrity. GREENLEAF ‘Hear The Rivers’ Album Review.

Words El Jefe.

Sweden, a country that has produced some of the greatest rock’n’roll known to man in the past couple of decades, and is showing no sign whatsoever of letting up. Thank fuck. The Awesome Machine, The Hellacopters, Truckfighters, Silver Devil just to name a few. Purebred rock’n’roll, one and all. Which brings me to Greenleaf. They began as a side band for Tommi Holappa of Dozer, but in 2009, in the wake of Dozer announcing their hiatus, Greenleaf climbed into the driver’s seat, dropped the clutch and hit the road albeit with Tommi being the only constant member throughout their existence. I was ridiculously attending only my first River Rocks festival at the Barwon Club in Geelong last Saturday. It’s strange how you know some things will be amazing experiences but you have just never been before. 2015 was in fact the 8th River Rocks and it had sold out again, which was to be expected with such a massive line up including Cosmic Psychos, Meanies, Hoss, The Casanovas, Batpiss, Mustang, Legends of Motorsport and loads more.

I arrived before doors and even the empty layout impressed me, there was something in the air already and it felt exciting, like the first few Big Day Out’s in Sydney I’d attended, Alternative Nation, and Summersault.

I was asked to cover the day but I also work with, have worked with or are mates with some of bands on the line up, so it wouldn’t be fair to not state this up front. I will therefore do my best to be completely unbiased and give an accurate account of the day.
