After a hit movie, making the sequel usually comes with a lot of extra pressure to perform and live up to the standards of the first. With Download Festival, add onto that the even greater pressure of taking over from where Soundwave left off in the heavy music category, and the comparisons it will bring being at the same location with similar lineups. From gates opening though, Download (the sequel) looked certain to be a hit at the ‘box office’. Continue reading

BRYAN GILES (RED FANG) Interview.

Interview Will Oakeshott.

Musicians expanding their horizons outside of their accomplished art-form has been a rather prevalent occurrence for quite some time. Whether film, television, fashion, business or any other avenue, it has been a movement that countless musicians have ventured toward with varying levels of success. For Oregon’s Stoner Metal band Red Fang, the quartet has somewhat followed suit by joining forces with Teutonic Wine Company, also from Portland, to create a European style red wine blend entitled “Red Fang Red”. As guitarist and vocalist Bryan Giles explains, the scenario came together rather organically:

“The winery is called ‘Teutonic’ and they are a local Portland small winery and they are just really into heavy metal and making wine.” He describes relatively straightforward – “They contacted us to see if we wanted to make a wine with them which we were understandably interested in doing, even though I don’t really know much about wine, but it sounded like a fun experience. Fast forward to 2016 and Australia is once again blessed to see Kadavar on our shores.

Cross Town Traffic wasn’t playing on the car stereo on Saturday night but was in my head as I stumbled haphazardly through side streets trying to evade capture on the main roads in an unexpected Saturday evening gridlock. Although it didn’t swallow me whole, it did unfortunately mean that I missed seeing Elbrus opening up the night at The Corner Hotel. Continue reading

Zakk Wylde is one of the most respected and well-known guitarists in the world for his work with Ozzy Osbourne’s band for 20 years, which he joined at just 19, and with his own band Black Label Society. Cassie Walker caught up with Wylde on the eve on BLS’s Australian tour and spoke about Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, filling Randy Rhoads shoes and the possibility of being involved in a Pantera reunion!

Cassie: It’s an honour to talk to you and I don’t even know where to start. The Zakk Wylde story is one of my favourite rock‘n’roll success stories of how you came to join Ozzy’s band. What did you do the day that you made that audition tape to send to him?
