If you’re a fan of heavy psych-rock with big, clean femme vox and you haven’t already checked out Blues Pills, I’d suggest their third LP, Holy Moly wouldn’t be a bad place to get on board.
Blues Pills are now approaching ten years old (they grow up so fast!), and, as bands tend to, have had a couple of personnel changes. Founding members Elin Larsson and Zack Anderson remain, with Zack recently switching to guitar to accommodate the departure of original guitarist Dorian Sorriaux. Long time drummer André Kvarnström now has Kristoffer Schander as his rhythm section “partner in crime” and the pair do a mighty fine line in rnr too.
‘Proud Woman’, a tune whose lyrical content is much needed in this day and time stamped a hefty footprint on the colour and tone of Holy Moly. Ripping vocals, some sweet gospel-esque b/v’s, raunchy and riff-heavy, it’s a driving thunderous tune.
Mondo Generator is the side project founded by Nick Oliveri, the notorious bassist from Kyuss, The Dwarves etc. The moniker was taken from a tune Oliveri had written during his Kyuss days, and really kinda suits the style of the music.
The band has had a sporadic existence over its’ 23 year life, with Oliveri being the only constant member, and an impressive list of former members. They play a sorta stoner-punk’n’roll kind of thing, if you hadn’t already heard. Shooters Bible doesn’t stray much from the trail blazed by earlier MG releases either.
What we have here, is an album fulla chunky riffs, rolling, liquid basslines, grittier than thou guitars and a collection of tunes, some whacked out, some just pure-bred mongrel dirty cock-rock but one and all ooze sleaze. All of this is capped off by Oliveri’s howling vocal, which is one part quasi-rockabilly yelp and one part maniacal roar. I think it’s fair to say, also, that the vox could either be a selling point or a deal breaker with MG records, and all despite Nicky’s reputed nurturing of the said vocal cords with a regimen of early nights, clean living and warm honey to preserve and prolong his unique style. From every perspective of the people involved with this show, there was a strong element of the “unexpected” which had transpired. However, the rare and astonishing characteristic of these surprises were that they all fell under a “positive” outlook. 1000mods managed to tour our fine nation for the first time and that would have probably felt like an impossibility over their career; furthermore, multiple shows sold out at very respectable venues including Adelaide where there was tough competition also playing at other locations on this night. It would seem that the famous Cuban writer José Martí is still very accurate with this quote, even after over 120 years since his unfortunate passing: “Charm is a product of the unexpected”. There were some amazing releases that come out in 2016, and as with every year, I start out with the best of intentions keeping a list of my favourites as they hit, only to let it fall by the wayside by about March. Yeah I know, it doesn’t last long! So undoubtedly I will forgot lots of great releases from 2016. There’s been the talked about releases like Metallica’sHardwired… To Self Destruct (which for me has been quite a disappointment, some moments of clarity and power but as whole, it wasn’t the driving force I was hoping for), then there’s been some that have come out of left field that have really thrown me for six and impressed me quite a lot, like Electric MagusOlympus Noms, which is Raul Sanchez (Magic Dirt, River Of Snakes, Midnight Woolf) latest offering through Wild Animals Records. Like with John Frusciante’s solo albums, some sound quite unique and very different to his work with Red Hot Chili Peppers (which is an awesome thing these days!) yet his style and soul still comes through in various ways. Electric Magus is like this for Sanchez compared to his ‘usual’ guitar driven work. It’s totally different yet still somehow connects with me for the same reasons.
I still listen to loads of releases from all around the world, but more and more as time goes on I find myself mainly listening to local bands. Possibly for a few reasons, I like to support local muso’s and friends, it’s possible to see them more live which in turn gets us more stoked on listening back to a band later, and maybe most importantly, there are just so many fuckin incredible bands in Melbourne and throughout Australia that there’s not enough time to sometimes reach out further. ’60s British Rock Legends The Troggs finally return to Australia this November to celebrate Wild Thing’s 50th Anniversary by performing all their Greatest Hits – ‘Wild Thing’, ‘With a Girl Like You’, ‘I Can’t Control Myself’, ‘Love is All Around’ and more!
They’re widely known to have inspired the age of garage and punk rock including The Ramones, Iggy Pop and The Buzzcocks. The Troggs first entered the Australian charts in 1966 with ‘Wild Thing’ going all the way to #1 knocking Frank Sinatra off the top spot! Their follow-up single ‘With A Girl Like You’ was also a top 10 smash going to #8. Their Aussie chart success continued with their third single ‘I Can’t Control Myself’ (later covered by our own James Baker) reaching #13 and solidifying their place as one of the most successful British bands to come from the wave of ’60s bands.
