Comprising an ecstatic Melbournian line-up for the evening, Organ Donor kicked off the first of three massive nights in celebration of The Bendigo Hotel’s 7th Birthday Bash. The three-piece unleashed their defiant hardcore rhythms throughout the filling band room, setting the pace for the evening’s line up to follow.
Batpiss are next in line, who hit the stage with a loud presence; distorted vocals mix through their coarse layers of spiralling guitar licks and dooming drums. Bringing the boozy crowd to the front of the room are the deepening grooves of their set list that turns into rounds of applause as they slur The Bendi a happy birthday. The venue doesn’t look big enough for the amount of punters who have managed to find enough space to stand. This makes it hard to believe that it’s become big enough to provide the space for the swelling pit of jumping heads that’s on the rise, though they’re making it work as they jump wildly about throughout the Batpiss show. The Shrine are the perfect good time party band, kick arse tunes, sweet as vibe and three of the coolest dudes that you want to hang out and have a beer with. So when they hit town, the frothies go round!
After a slight shift in line up with Clowns having to unfortunately pull out, Grim Rhythm opened up this mid-week gig and turned my world upside fuckin down! They’re a three-piece instrumental band with some extremely cool grooves. The style and way the riffs are played at first sound like doom, but there’s much more to them. The guitar tone is dirty and it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what it reminds me of but Grim Rhythm have created a world of their own. Some incredible chord changes and bends all over the top of such a kick arse rhythm section. The way they build up a song and without us even knowing it pull it right back and the explosion disappears into nothing, the change is unnoticeable until you’ve sunken deep into the next groove. I highly recommend seeing this band!
Even on paper, this list of bands kicks arse, loud and up close being sprayed with beer and sweat is a whole other level of awesome. Some of Australia’s strongest stoner / sludge / doom bands took over The Tote for DopeFest and owned it completely. Every band impressed and threw out headlining sets but it needs to be said that Horsehunter had the packed out main band room eating out of the palm of their hands within the first few strums, Noosa’s Hobo Magic have stolen the hearts and souls of everyone in Melbourne, Hydromedusa and Spacebong blew minds… the list could go on. Massive shout out to Michael Harutyunyan from Horsehunter for putting the day together and we all hope it’s the first of many. It was a massive success!
