Straight out of the gate Cosmic Kahuna get to work, no fucking around. ‘Fault in the AE–35 Unit’ pummels the listener into submission with no apologies.
Get back in the ring, wait to regain consciousness and then the track ‘Muzzle’ will be hard and sharp steel cap to the head. If you can see straight after this track, try and shake it off and
head straight into ‘Hazy Cosmic Jive’.
‘Gossamer’ is a deep sludge fest. It’s impossible not to get caught in the riffs. Like quicksand, it sucks you in and refuses to let go.
This is one hell of a relentless album, it doesn’t let go for a microsecond. If you’re a fan of ’80s hardcore bands this is right up your alley. It’s the kind of album you would play if you were on a work site and were in charge of demolition; just start the wrecking ball and smash shit until there is nothing left but dust. Continue reading →
Ben Ely is best known for playing bass with Regurgitator for over 20 years. The Gurge are well known for their irreverent sense of humour and pop punk tunes, so when I heard the first track ‘1988’, which is a beautiful dark tune about Ely growing up in Brisbane, it completely floored me. It’s a deep and personal story about Ely and his mates first adventures of going to punk rock shows and getting into fights with bouncers and thugs.
I was definitely not expecting this kind of album at all, and to be honest, Strange Tales of Drugs & Lost Love nailed me to the wall from the first track onward. Immediacy is the first word that come to mind as soon as the track ‘Doom Boogie’ drops first on the El Colosso album, Pathways. Its relentless riffs never let go, vocalist Matt Cooper is an absolute powerhouse monster of a singer, reminiscent of all my favourite singers from the last 20 years; Layne Staley, Chris Cornell and a million other in between his pitch and range are out of this world, he holds the words in such taut tight control, that you become breathless in awe.
The single ‘Leatherhead’ is a perfect first release, its groove heavy rhythm will have you punching holes in the walls and screaming with ecstatic pleasure.
‘The Hunted’ just pulverises your ears until a river of blood is flowing.
The title track ‘Pathways’, has more ridiculously heavy riffling that entrances you so deep that not even a trained hypnotist could wake you up! Continue reading →
Brand new to the Melbourne music scene, Mental Tremors hit the ground running. They released their self-titled debut and within a couple of weeks they were signed to European DIY label Cursed Tongue. It’s easy to hear why they were signed to a label so quickly, as soon as the cat scratch riff of ‘Like A Broken Town’ kicks in, the listener is body slammed against the floor and spends the next five and half minutes trying to compose themselves and left wondering what the hell just happened.
‘Bastard Son’ slows the tempo down slightly; the drums penetrate deep and hard with an ongoing hypnotic groove.
Considering the band is only a duo it’s hard to fathom the racket they make, a wall of sound is built high above the listener and smashed down around their ears with an almighty force. Continue reading →
Local Melbourne riff lords Dr. Colossus have been bludgeoning crowds with their melodic fuzziness for a number of years now, the new album The Dank is full of hypnotic groove that will get the listener lost as soon as the needle hits the record.
The name Dr. Colossus is a reference to a Simpsons character and the album is filled throughout with others; from the track ‘Future Bart’ to the cover art (which has a picture of Moe’s Tavern), these references add so much fun to the songs that you can’t help but laugh. Continue reading →
During the ’90s Melbourne had a thriving all ages band scene, and the kings of that scene were The Meanies, they realised that punk rock was not just for adults but for everyone of all ages, everywhere they played there was total chaos, but not in the malicious sense, it was more unbridled energy kind of chaos.

Stoner legend Brant Bjork has been a frequent visitor to our shores, so when his tour was announced, all the desert rats come out in droves. Before the show at The Corner, Bjork had already played Negative Waves in Geelong and Cherry Rock at Cherry Bar. Along for the ride he bought Holy Serpent, Don Fernando and Fuck the Fitzroy Doom Scene.
It’d been a long time between beers since I’ve seen FTFDS so I made sure I was front and centre. As soon the riff for ‘Better Off Dead’ kicked in I was pinned to the wall. The unique thing about this band is the three part harmonies, it gives the performance incredible strength. They finish off with the sludgiest version of ‘Facing The Ruin’, by the end of the set my heart was in my throat and my ears were blasted, did I care? Not in the slightest. Continue reading →
The first thirty seconds of Sydney band Web City Limits new single, ‘Traitor’, displays everything I love about metal; riffs that belt you in the head smashed out by a chorus that punches you in the gut, and a lead vocalist that pierces your eardrums. Mandy Newton is a name to keep your eyes on. If this single is anything to go by, big things are to come from Web City Limits.
The second track ‘Dope’, pounds the listener into submission, the rock hard riffs are brutal yet melodic. Web City Limits are fairly new to the scene, the main thing I love about this track is that it makes the listener stand up and pay attention. I listen to a lot of metal, and I get lost on how a lot of it is same old, same old, so it’s refreshing to hear something that heavily wears its influences but brings something new to the scene. The album Solas byThe Answer is the pinnacle of a tumultuous time for the band. They’d just finished a huge tour of the US and the lead singer Cormac Neeson was in a creative slump, he’d been pushed to the limit, so much so he didn’t think he was able to produce another album.
As well as the creative problems, his wife had just given birth to a boy who had been born prematurely, so this album is a deeply personal journey not only for the band but the audience as well.
The opening track and title song ‘Solas’ has an incredible build, you can imagine the band playing on top of a mountain with no one else around, the swirling echo’s of guitar entwine the listener into a serpentine state. Then it drops like a parachute jumper with no chute pure velocity, it is a fantastic opening track. Continue reading →
